Tau Technology was founded in 2013 in Gaborone, Botswana. Our team has been involved in promoting technology for social impact for over 10 years.
Technology should be used to solve problems and improve quality of life. Tau Technology aims to support and promote the use of sustainable and scalable technology solutions. We bring people together to collaborate and find answers that effectively make use of limited resources using open and available technologies that have proven success.
The goal of this project was to develop a national data warehouse that would integrate sources of national health data from disparate electronic health systems in Botswana. We worked with the Ministry of Health programs to implement a structure to extract, model and load this data into a national data warehouse that we developed. We built a business intelligence layer on top of the data warehouse where health officials could visualize and report on national health data from multiple programs on a timely basis.
Health care workers in Northern Botswana were struggling to report and track cases of Malaria in their districts in a timely manner. Working with the Botswana national malaria program, we developed a mobile application to collect malaria case data and upload it to a centralized server. Health care workers were able login and view a geo-located surveillance map to identify hotspots and outbreaks of malaria within the health districts.
For over 10 years, the National TB program (BNTP) had been using a standalone Electronic Medical Record system (EMR) for their national tuberculosis (TB) surveillance. We worked with BNTP to setup OpenMRS as a national EMR system for the program. We migrated the national TB data and customized the system for health care worker needs.
We worked with a pharmacy program to digitize paper based pharmaceutical stock records. We developed an automated optical character recognition (OCR) system that processed bulk paper based records and uploaded them to a centralized database for analysis.
We worked with a national program who were primarily recording patient HIV test records in paper based format. We worked with the program to set up a bulk scanning and optical character recognition (OCR) system to digitize these records. With a team on the ground, we visited over 50 clinics, scanned and digitized these records and uploaded them to a secure national HIV database for monitoring and analysis.
The nutrition program consistently runs an annual survey to conduct a study and analysis on nutrition and related outcomes nationally. We worked with the nutrition program to build and customize a mobile data collection application for surveyors and a web based interface to aggregate and visualize data submitted from the survey application.
